Johnson & Graver Pace Southern Maine to 2-1 Win over Plymouth State

GORHAM, Maine  – Senior Cole Johnson (Orange, Mass./Ralph C. Mahar) and junior Alex Graver (Freeport, Maine) each scored a goal to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the Plymouth State University Panthers in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Wednesday night at Hannaford Field.

The Records:
Plymouth State (6-8-2, 2-6 LEC)
Southern Maine (6-5-7, 3-2-3 LEC)

Tonight's game marked the 79th meeting between the University of Southern Maine and Plymouth State University. The Panthers lead the overall series 57-17-5.  In the last eight seasons the Huskies are 4-2-2 against Plymouth State, and have won two consecutively defeating PSU 7-1 in 2025.

How It Happened:
  • Despite controlling possession the Huskies found themselves trailing Plymouth State late in the first half. A throw-in from Panther Luke McLaughlin created trouble for the Huskies in the box, and Nick Ferro, who has subbed on moments earlier, pounced on the ball and hit a driven shot to the right side of the net in the 33rd minute.
  • The Huskies had several strong chances in the first half to take the lead, including a header from Graver in the third, and shot from Brady in the 27th, but both times Plymouth State keeper Bryant Amaral made a diving stop.
  • Down a goal, Southern Maine responded in the 36th minute tying the game.  Senior Jack Brady (Stuart, Fla.) sent in a quality ball forward allowing Johnson to split PSU defender and then finish to the right for his eighth goal of the season.
  • The game remained tied until the 67th.  After Johnson was brought down in the box, the Huskies were awarded a penalty kick.  Graver stepped to the spot and hit a no-doubt shot to the right netting for his third penalty conversion of the season and a 2-1 Husky lead.
  • Both teams had looks for another goal in the final 23 minutes.  Husky senior goalkeeper Gabe Wagner (Freeport, Maine) turned in another strong performance and made two of his three saves in the second half to preserve the Huskies' lead including an attempt in the 89th minute.

The Goalkeepers:
PSU: Bryant Amaral (3-7-1), 2 GA, 7 Saves
SM: Gabe Wagner (5-4-5), 1 GA, 3 Saves

Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine led in shots 20-9 (9-4 on goal), and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • With 10 goals this season, Graver is the first Husky men's soccer player to reach double-digit goals since Mazen Alajari's 11 goals in 2012. Graver's 10 goals so far this season gives him at 19 in his career. He has 19 goals and three assists for 41 points.  He is tied for 15th in career goals, and 25th in career points.
