Southern Maine Falls at Bridgewater State 9-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine women's tennis team's season came to a close Saturday when the Huskies fell to the Bridgewater State University Bears 9-0 in a Little East Conference match at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears snapped a two-match losing skid with the win and finished the regular season 9-5 overall.  The Bears, owners of a 7-1 mark in Little East play, are the second seed in the upcoming tournament and receive a first-round bye.  The Huskies finished the season 2-10 overall and winless in the conference.

Bridgewater State swept the three doubles matches losing only one game, then came back to sweep all six singles matches in straight sets.  Sophomore Alisha Silva (Taunton, Mass.) and freshman Hayley Anderson (San Antonio, Texas/Castle Hills First Baptist) led the way taking an 8-0 win at first doubles.  Silva won a singles match over junior Liz Martin (Naugatuck, Conn./Woodland Regional) at number two, 6-3, 6-1, and Anderson took a straight-sets win over senior Emily Estes (Gorham, Maine) at number three singles.

Senior Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass./Somerset-Berkley Regional) and sophomores Olivia Lakes (Dorchester, Mass./Boston Latin), Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, Mass./Sutton Memorial) and Bojana Roman (Somerset, Mass./Somerset-Berkley Regional) also earned wins in doubles and singles action.

The Little East Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament begins Tuesday with a pair of first-round matches.  Regular season champion Rhode Island College and Bridgewater State will get first-round byes and host semifinal matches on Thursday.  The winner of the tournament receives an automatic berth into the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship next spring.
