Box Score KEENE, N.H. – Four different players scored as the Keene State College Owls defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 4-1, in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Owl Athletic Complex.
Winners of two of their last three games, Keene State improves to 5-4 overall with the win and remains undefeated in the Little East at 3-0. Suffering its second consecutive setback, Southern Maine dips to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the Little East Conference.
Senior Melissa Habelow (Belmont, Mass.), sophomore Kayla Renaud (Somers, Conn.) and freshman Mariah Barnett (Saxtons River, Vt./Bellows Halls) each scored a goal in the first half to stake the Owls a 3-0 lead before the break. Habelow and Renaud's goals were unassisted, while Barnett scored her first intercollegiate goal off of an assist from senior Marisa LeMoine (Berlin, N.H.).
Leading 3-0, the Owls made it 4-0 nine minutes into the second half as sophomore Brittney Cardente (North Kingston, R.I.) tallied her second goal of the season with an unassisted strike.
Southern Maine senior Peyton Dostie (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) broke up the shutout converting a penalty stroke in the 54th minute for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Dostie now has 44 goals and 106 points in her USM career. She is second in USM career record in both categories.
Keene State junior goalkeeper Shauna Whittemore (Bennington, Mass./ConVal Regional) made seven saves to earn the win. Huskies' sophomore Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine) made four saves. Junior Allison Ward (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside) and sophomore Michaela Demers (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) each had a defensive save for Southern Maine.
Keene State held an 18-11 advantage in shots on goal, while the Huskies held a slim 9-8 advantage in penalty corners.
Southern Maine remains on the road and will face Salem State on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) in a Little East Conference game. Keene State hosts Plymouth State on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) in a LEC match.
