Southern Maine Falls at Thomas 5-4

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Sophomore Liz Martin (Naugatuck, Conn./Woodland Regional) earned a pair of points for the University of Southern Maine women's tennis team Thursday afternoon, but it was not enough as the Huskies fell at Thomas College 5-4 in a non-conference match.

The loss was the Huskies' second heartbreaking one-point decision to the Terriers this season and dropped their overall mark to 2-4 on the season.  The Terriers improved to 3-2 on the year.

Martin picked up a straight-sets win over rookie Amelia Guimond (Fort Kent, Maine) at number five singles, and combined with classmate Emily Collins (St. David, Maine/Madawaska) at number three doubles for the Huskies only doubles point.

The Huskies trailed 2-1 after the three doubles matches as senior Jessica Bowen (Lewiston, Maine) and sophomore Lindsey Allen (Jay, Maine/Spruce Mountain) teamed for an 8-5 win for the Terriers at number one, and rookie Olivia Mora (Surry, Maine/Ellsworth) and senior Dalia Williams (Boston, Mass./Josiah Quincy Upper School) took the point at number two by an 8-4 score.

Bowen, Williams, and Mora won singles points at numbers one, three and four, respectively, to give the Terriers the three points they needed to clinch the win.

Juniors Molly Gallagher (South Portland, Maine/Deering) and Emily Estes (Gorham, Maine) had straight-sets singles wins for the Huskies at numbers two and six.

The Huskies will be on the road Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match at Worcester State University.  Thomas will host a pair of North Atlantic Conference matches this weekend facing Castleton State College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) and Green Mountain College on Sunday (1:00 p.m.).
