Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Senior Peyton Dostie (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) scored four goals and had two assists while junior Allison Ward (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside) recorded her first career hat trick to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to an 11-1 win over the New England College Pilgrims in a non-conference field hockey game Tuesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
With the win, Southern Maine evens its record to 3-3 on the season. New England College suffers its eighth consecutive loss to stand at 0-8. In the 40 meetings between the two schools, the Huskies now lead the series 26-14-0.
The Huskies' 11 goals establishes a new single-game record for the program, snapping the 41-year-old record of nine goals scored in a 9-0 win over UMaine Fort Kent on October 8, 1973. Dostie's 10 points (4g, 2a) equals the school's single-game record for points in a game. Dostie is tied with former USM standout Angela Cook who scored 10 points (5g, 0a) in the 9-0 win over UMFK. After today's performance, Dostie is also second in career points scored with 104 on 43 goals and 18 assists. The points' record of 131 (60g, 11a) is held by former All-American Kristin Potito.
Dostie scored her first two goals of the game in the opening seven minutes quickly putting the Huskies in control. USM went ahead 3-0 on freshman Kaylie Andrews' (Kittery, Maine/Traip Academy) second goal of the season on an assist from Dostie in the 14th minute. New England College made it 3-1 five minutes later when junior Cody Kent (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) completed the assist from senior Patricia Wright (Essex, Mass./Manchester-Essex) 19:01 into the game.
After the NEC goal, however, it was all Huskies as USM tacked on four more goals before the half to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Dostie scored at the 21:22 mark and Ward scored her first goal of the game at the 24:37 mark before Dostie scored her final goal of the game at 29:27. Huskies' senior Rebecca Pratt (Cornville, Maine/Skowhegan) completed the half with a goal at 31:20.
The second half began as the first half ended with the Huskies scoring four more goals. Sophomore Michaela Demers (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) netted her first goal of the season less than two minutes into the half, and was followed by goals from Ward, freshman Lindsay Jackson (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) during the 42nd and 50th minute. Ward notched the Huskies' final goal of the game, to earn the hat trick, cleaning up a loose ball in the circle in the 60th minute for the 11-1 final.
New England College freshman goalkeeper Karlie Bove (Jefferson, Mass./St. Peter Marian) made 17 saves in the loss as USM held a 38-3 advantage in shots. Sophomore Chantalle Black (North Babylon, N.Y.) made a defensive save for the Pilgrims. USM sophomore Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine) earned the win with two saves.
Southern Maine hosts Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday (2:30 p.m.) in a Little East Conference game. New England College hosts Saint Joseph's College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.)
