Southern Maine Falls at Rhode Island College 9-0
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The unbeaten Rhode Island College Anchorwomen won their sixth straight match defeating the University of Southern Maine Huskies 9-0 in a Little East Conference match Saturday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Courts.
The Anchorwomen, the preseason favorite to win the conference, remained undefeated at 6-0 and 1-0 in the Little East. The Huskies slip to 1-3 overall with their third straight loss, and 0-2 in conference play.
The best match of the day came at number one doubles where the RIC tandem of rookie Kim Daigle (Sterling, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and senior Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) prevailed over the USM duo of juniors Sarah Hill (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) and Molly Gallagher (South Portland, Maine/Deering) 8-5.
In singles action, Daigle came back to defeat Gallagher at number two in straight sets while RIC junior Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, R.I./Ponaganset) defeated Hill in straight sets at number one. Brown posted a straight-sets win over USM junior captain Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, Maine) at number three.
Southern Maine will be back in action tomorrow (11:00 a.m.) traveling to Johnson (Vt.) State College for a non-conference match. Rhode Island College will play a non-conference match against Emerson College on Tuesday (4:30 p.m.) at Harvard University.
