BRUNWSICK, Maine -- Senior left-hander Logan Carman (Newfields, N.H./Exeter) pitched seven strong innings to help the University of Southern Maine defeat Bowdoin College, 5-2, in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Pickard Field.

The win was the third straight for the #5/#6 Huskies and improved their overall record to 27-8.  The Huskies swept the teams' home-and-home series this season.  The Polar Bears, playing their regular-season finale, fell to 17-14-1.

Carman picked up his first win of the season going the first seven innings.  He allowed no earned runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.  Three relievers combined to pitch the final two innings.

Sophomore Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) and seniors Chris Bernard (Scarborough, Maine) and Troy Thibodeau (Danvers, Mass./New Hampton) had two hits apiece for the Huskies.  Dexter and Bernard each had a double and a single, and Thibodeau scored twice.

Junior Aaron Rosen (Morganville, N.J.) went 4 for 5, including two doubles, and drove in both Polar Bear runs.  Senior Duncan Taylor (Washington, D.C.) had a pair of singles.  Sophomore starter Harry Ridge (Yarmouth, Maine/Cheverus) went five innings allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits and took the loss.  Ridge (3-2) did not walk a batter and struck out three.

USM got on the board in the fourth inning when Dexter doubled to lead off the frame and moved to third one out later. Bernard lofted a sacrifice fly to left to score Dexter to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, junior Jake Glauser (Goffstown, N.H.) led off with a single and moved to second on a base hit by Thibodeau.  After rookie Matt Bender (Walpole, Mass.) laid a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third, freshman Paul McDonough (Wells, Maine) tapped a grounder to short that scored Glauser.  Bowdoin appeared to be out of the inning one play later, but a throwing error extended the inning and allowed Thibodeau to score.  Dexter singled home senior John Carey (South Portland, Maine) as the Huskies increased their advantage to 4-0.

Bowdoin cut into the lead in the bottom half of the frame when senior Kyle LeBlanc (Newburyport, Mass.) singled and advanced to second on a throwing error.  Rosen doubled him home to make it a 4-1 game.

USM got the run back in the top of the ninth when Carey delivered a two-out single that plated Thibodeau.  Rosen ripped an RBI single to score junior Cole DiRoberto (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) in the home half of the ninth for the Polar Bears, but that would be as close as Bowdoin would get.

Southern Maine is back action tomorrow (4:00 p.m.) hosting Bates College for a non-conference game.
