Box Score BEVERLY, Mass. -- Junior Harry Oringer (Dartmouth, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) and senior EJ Martinez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep) drove in five runs apiece to lead the Endicott College Gulls to a 16-7 victory over the fifth-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference game Friday afternoon at North Field.
The win was the fifth straight for the Gulls, and improved their overall record to 7-2. The Huskies had their three-game winning snapped and fell to 10-4 overall. The two teams are scheduled to play again at USM on April 16.
Oringer had a home run and two singles while Martinez had a double and two singles to pace the Gulls' 17-hit attack. Freshman Cam Farnham (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Matthew Paolo (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug) each had a double and two singles. Every player in the Gulls lineup had at least one hit.
Rookie southpaw reliever Luke Morse (Westford, Mass.) picked up his second win of the season giving up one run on three hits and three walks in 2.2 innings of work. Senior Connor McLaughlin (Clinton, Mass.) and freshman Colby Morris (Newburyport, Mass.) followed Morse on the hill and combined for 2.1 scoreless innings.
For USM, senior Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) equaled the Huskies' school single-game record with two triples. Rookie Matt Bender (Walpole, Mass.) had a double and a single, and senior Troy Thibodeau (Danvers, Mass./New Hampton) had a pair of singles. Sophomore Nick DiBiase (Portland, Maine/Deering) had a double and three RBI.
Senior right-hander Chris Bernard (Scarborough, Maine) started on the mound and was tagged with his second loss of the season.
USM took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Chadwick tripled and Bernard followed with a single.
The Gulls responded with four runs in the home half of the inning to take the lead for good. Senior Tad Gold (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) drove in the first run with a single, and Paolo followed with an RBI double. Martinez drove in Gold and Paolo with a double to right to make it 4-1.
DiBiase pulled the Huskies within one (4-3) with a two-run double in the second inning.
In the third, Endicott sent 10 men to the plate en route to scoring seven runs. Martinez brought in the first run with a bases loaded walk that ended Bernard's day on the hill. Farnham had an RBI single later in the inning, and Oringer hit a three-run homer to left center to cap the rally.
Southern Maine crept back to within four (11-7) with three runs in the fourth and a single run in the fifth. In the fourth, Bender had an RBI single, DiBiase picked up his third RBI with a fielder's choice, and rookie Paul McDonough (Wells, Maine) hit a solo home run. Chadwick had his second triple in the fifth, and scored on Bernard's groundout.
Endicott added four insurance runs in the fifth, and one more in the seventh. Martinez had RBI singles in both innings.
Southern Maine begins its Little East Conference schedule on Saturday (10:00 a.m.) traveling to Rhode Island College for a doubleheader. Endicott opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) hosting Eastern Nazarene College for a doubleheader.
