Box Score PROVIDENCE - Junior Chris Burton (New Rochelle, N.Y.) scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures as the second-seeded Rhode Island College Anchormen used a second-half push to defeat the sevent-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies 74-66 in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Little East Conference men's basketball tournament Tuesday night at The Murray Center.
The defending Little East Conference Champion, Rhode Island College improves to 18-8 overall and advances to the semifinals of the 2014 LEC tourney. Southern Maine concludes its season with a 7-19 record.
Trailing by four, 49-45, after a three from USM freshman Zach Leal (York, Maine) with 11:11 to play, the Anchormen used an 8-0 run to grab the lead for good from the Huskies. After Leal's three, RIC took advantage of back-to-back threes from junior Eric Alleyne (Watertown, Mass.) and senior Michael Palumbo (Providence, R.I.) for a 51-49 lead before Palumbo sank two free throws to put RIC ahead 53-49 with 8:32 to play.
USM senior Tyler Penney (Barnstead, N.H./Bishop Brady) made it a one possession game 53-51 with a layup at the 8:04 mark, before the Anchormen rattled off an 11-3 run to grab its largest lead of the game 64-54 with 3:25 to play to take control. Palumbo countered Penney's layup with a three-pointer, while junior Victor Smith (Providence, R.I./Mt. Pleasant) scored six of the Anchormen's next eight points in the decisive run.
Four consecutive free throws from Husky sophomore Cole Libby (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) made it a 64-58 game with 2:59 to play, but USM was unable to get any closer as RIC closed out the game on the line making 10 of 10 free throws down the stretch.
Burton was 5-for-12 from the field for his team-high 14 points, while Alleyne tacked on 13 points on a trio of three-pointers. Smith was 6-for-10 from the field for 12 points, adding a team-high eight rebounds, and Palumbo was 3-for-3 from three-point range for 11 points.
Penney led all scorers with 23 points for the Huskies. He was 10-for-15 from the field. He grabbed four rebounds and had two blocked shots. Libby added 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals in a strong effort. Senior Conor Sullivan (Scarborough, Maine) added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
