Colby Sweeps Southern Maine 9-0

            GORHAM, Maine -- The visiting Colby College women's tennis team swept all nine matches Sunday afternoon to defeat the University of Southern Maine, 9-0, in non-conference action at the Gorham High School Courts.

            The win improved the Mules record to 3-0.  The Huskies dropped their fourth straight match to fall to 3-10 overall.

            The duo of senior Erica Talamo (Newton, Mass./Buckingham, Browne & Nichols) and rookie Jamie Au (Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong) led the way for the Mules from the top of the ladder.  Talamo and Au combined to defeat junior Sarah Hill (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) and sophomore Liz Martin (Naugatuck, Conn./Woodland Regional) 8-4 at first doubles.  Talamo came back to defeat Hill at number one singles, 6-2, 6-1, and Au defeated junior Molly Gallagher (South Portland, Maine/Deering) in the day's closest match 6-4, 6-3 at number two.

            Rookies Katie Ryan (Falmouth, Maine) and Olivia Stein (Wellesley, Mass.) each earned a pair of points for the Mules.  The pair combined to defeat juniors Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, Maine) and Emily Estes (Gorham, Maine) at number three doubles, 8-1.  Ryan posted a straight-sets win over sophomore Katie Quinn (Hollis, Maine/Bonny Eagle) at number five singles, and Stein was a straight-sets winner over sophomore Emily Collins (St. David, Maine/Madawaska) at number six.

            Southern Maine is off until Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it travels to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for a Little East Conference match.  Colby plays next at Wheaton College next Sunday (11:00 a.m.).
