Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Senior Peyton Dostie (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) scored a pair of goals and junior Alison Ward (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside) added another as the University of Southern Maine Huskies earned a 3-1 win over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
With the win, Southern Maine is now 5-5 in the Little East Conference and 8-10 overall. The Colonials, who entered the game in third place in the LEC standings, fall to 9-8 overall and 6-4 in the LEC suffering their second straight loss.
Dostie's second goal of the game established a new career points record for the Huskies' program. Dostie now has 54 goals and 24 assists in her career for 132 points, beating the previous record of 131 points (60 goals, 11 assists) held by former USM All-American Kristin Potito (1986-1988). Dostie now has the career records for points and assists during her time at USM and is six goals away from the career goals mark of 60 held by Potito.
The Huskies' grabbed a 1-0 lead early in the game as Dostie collected a lead pass from sophomore Michaela Demers (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) in the sixth minute. Demers earned her third assist of the season with a strong play in the midfield before leading Dostie to a near one-v-one situation in the circle. USM's one goal advantage stood through the first half as USM sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine) played a strong opening 35 minutes making five saves.
Ward gave the Huskies some breathing room in the second half scoring her eighth goal of the season in just 73 seconds into the half. Off of a penalty corner, Ward collected the ball after the insertion from senior Rebecca Pratt (Cornville, Maine/Skowhegan) and touched the ball to her right before unleashing a powerful shot at the top of the circle for a 2-0 USM advantage.
Western Connecticut trimmed the Huskies' lead to one goal in the 52nd minute when junior Jenny Cappello (Litchfield, Conn.) collected a loose ball in the circle and beat Kasbohm with a hard-struck shot for her third goal of the season. With the Colonials pressing for an equalizer, Dostie used a phenomenal individual effort to give USM some breathing room in the 58th minute. Dostie collected a ball outside the circle and made a strong move to create some space before rocketing a shot to the high upper far corner of the goal for the 3-1 USM final.
Kasbohm earned the win for USM making six saves. Western Connecticut sophomore goalkeeper Kristy Trotta (Danbury, Conn.) made five saves for the Colonials in the loss.
