NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth dominated the lower half of the ladder Friday to take a 6-3 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Friday afternoon at the UMD Tennis Courts.
The win improved the Corsairs record to 5-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference. The loss was the fifth straight for the Huskies who fell to 3-11 overall and 1-6 in LEC play.
Juniors Sarah Hill (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) and Molly Gallagher (South Portland, Maine/Deering) accounted for all the University of Southern Maine points. The pair combined for the Huskies lone point in doubles play taking an 8-5 decision over junior Maggie LeBrun (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and sophomore Jillian Reichert (Marion, Mass.).
Hill came back in singles action to defeat LeBrun 6-3, 6-3, at #1 singles, and Gallagher prevailed 6-3, 6-4 over freshman Kerry Magoon (Marshfield, Mass.) at #2 singles.
The Corsairs took two points in doubles winning at #2 and #3, and the bottom four singles matches. Junior Kristen Rose (North Dartmouth, Mass.) earned a pair of points for the Corsairs combining with rookie Molina Oung (Bourne, Mass.) for an 8-3 win at #3 doubles, and taking a 6-1, 6-1 win over junior Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, Maine) at #4 singles.
Freshman Mollie McCaffrey (Taunton, Mass.) paired with Magoon for an 8-3 win at #2 doubles, then took the decisive fifth point with a straight sets win over sophomore Liz Martin (Naugatuck, Conn.) at #3 singles.
Southern Maine concludes the regular season tomorrow (1:00 p.m.) hosting Bridgewater State University at the Gorham (Maine) High School courts. UMass Dartmouth finishes the regular season on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) traveling to Western Connecticut State University.
