Colby-Sawyer Downs Southern Maine 8-1

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Ashlyn Ramsey (Barkhamsted, Conn./Northwestern Regional) and rookie Sam White (Stockbridge, Mass./Monument Mountain) combined for a win at number one doubles, then came back to post straight-sets wins in singles play as the visiting Colby-Sawyer College Chargers defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 8-1, in a non-conference match played at the Costello Sports Complex field house Wednesday afternoon.

The win snapped a two-match losing skid for the Chargers, and improved their overall record to 6-5.  The Huskies dropped their second straight match to slip to 3-8 overall.

Ramsay and White combined for an 8-2 win over junior Sarah Hill (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) and sophomore Liz Martin (Naugatuck, Conn./Woodland Regional) to get the Chargers off on the right foot.  Ramsey later defeated Hill 6-1, 6-0 and White knocked off junior Molly Gallagher (South Portland, Maine/Deering) 6-2, 6-1 at the top of the singles ladder.

Sophomore Katie Quinn (Hollis, Maine/Bonny Eagle) staved off two match points in a super tiebreaker to earn the Huskies' lone point with a 6-4, 4-6 (15-13) win over freshman Marissa Ulmer (Windham, Maine) at number five singles.

The Chargers built a 3-0 lead in doubles play by taking a pair of 8-6 wins.  Senior Ozana Tkachenko (Lviv, Ukraine) and freshman Lauren Blanchard (Agawam, Mass.) held off Gallagher and Quinn at number two doubles, and senior Ellen Graham (Newburyport, Mass.) and freshman Christine Hill (Wallingford, Conn.) edged out junior Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, Maine) and sophomore Emily Collins (St. David, Maine/Madawaska) by the same score at number three.

Southern Maine returns to the courts this weekend for a pair of home matches.  USM will host Salem State University in a Little East Conference match on Saturday (1:00 p.m.), and Colby College for a non-conference match on Sunday (12:00 p.m.).  Colby-Sawyer will play at Castleton State College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
