Box Score GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Kelby Lorenz (Mississauga, Ont.) scored a pair of goals as the University of Southern Maine Huskies skated to a 3-3 overtime tie with the visiting Colby College Mules in a non-conference men's ice hockey game Tuesday evening at the USM Ice Arena.
The tie was the third in the last four games for the Huskies who are now 4-6-3 overall. The Mules move to 5-4-3 on the season.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the third period, the Huskies twice took a one-goal lead only to see the Mules come back to tie the score. Lorenz tied the game at 1-1 at 3:31 with his fifth goal of the season converting a feed from senior Mike Greene (Arvada, Colo.). Just over seven minutes later, rookie Todd Bannerman (Georgetown, Ont.) gave the Huskies their first lead tipping home a shot from the blue line by sophomore PM Lapointe (St. Georges, Que.).
The USM lead lasted only 16 seconds as Colby sophomore Tyler Lingel (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) tied the game with his fourth goal of the season. Lingel fired home a shot from the left wing circle after collecting the rebound of shot taken by rookie Scott Fenwick (Quispamsis, N.B.).
Lorenz tallied his second goal of the period with 4:15 remaining, assisted by senior Angelo Vrachnas (St. James, N.Y.) and rookie Cole Klippenstein (Franklin, Tenn.), to give the Huskies a 3-2 advantage.
The Mules pressed the attack as the clock counted down and senior Nick Lanza (Rocky Hill, Conn.) netted the tying goal with 1:32 to play with a shot from the top of the left wing circle. The goal was the seventh of the season for Lanza.
In the five-minute overtime period, the Mules had the best scoring chances, but USM sophomore goalie Josh Hillegas (Middleton, Wis.) came up with two big saves to preserve the tie.
The teams skated through a fast-paced, scoreless first period with Hillegas and Colby junior Jordan Nathan (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) stopping everything. Colby finally broke the ice late in the second period when freshman Kevin Doherty (Wakefield, Mass.) scored from just to the left of the cage.
Colby out shot USM by a 31-28 margin for the game. Hillegas registered 28 saves for the Huskies while Nathan, making his first appearance of the season, had 25 saves at the other end.
Southern Maine hits the road this weekend for ECAC Men's East games at New England College on Friday (7:30 p.m.) and Saint Anselm College on Saturday (3:00 p.m.). Colby will host Amherst College on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Hamilton College on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) for a pair of NESCAC games.
