SALEM, Mass. – Junior Lauren Woods (Burlington, Mass.) and sophomore Hillary Gustafson (Belchertown, Mass.) earned an 8-3 at second doubles as the Salem State University Vikings won two out of three doubles points en route to a 6-3 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon.
Salem State improves to 2-4 overall with the win and evens out its Little East Conference record at 1-1. Southern Maine falls to 6-3 with the loss and 1-3 in the conference.
Woods and Gustafson defeated the Husky duo of sophomore Molly Gallagher (South Portland, Maine/Deering) and freshman Katie Quinn (Hollis, Maine/Bonny Eagle). Junior Emily Yanchun (Saugus, Mass.) and sophomore Tara Garvey (Palmer, Mass.) downed freshman Liz Martin (Naugatuck, Conn.) and sophomore Emily Estes (Gorham, Maine) 8-3 at third doubles.
Southern Maine senior Mary Moran (Windham, Maine/Portland) and sophomore Jenna Willey (Windham, Maine) earned an 8-6 win at first doubles defeated Viking sophomores April McDermott (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Katie Razzaboni (Hooksett, N.H./Trinity).
In singles action, Salem State won four out of six points, sweeping the fourth through sixth singles points. Moran defeated McDermott 6-1, 6-3 at first singles, while Gallagher downed Razzaboni 6-0, 6-0 at third singles.
Southern Maine hosts Western Connecticut on Friday (11:00 a.m.) in a Little East Conference match. Salem State travels to Plymouth State on Wednesday (1:00 p.m.) in an LEC match.
