GORHAM, Maine – Senior captains Mary Moran (Windham, Maine/Portland) and Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) led from the top of the doubles line up with an 8-1 victory to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 9-0 win over the Thomas College Terriers in a non-conference women's tennis match Thursday afternoon at the Gorham High School courts.
The win is the second straight for the Huskies who improve to 5-2 overall and 2-1 at home. The loss snaps Thomas' two-match winning streak and drops their record to 2-3 overall.
Moran and Boutin downed the Terrier tandem of junior Jessica Bowen (Lewiston, Maine) and freshman Lindsey Allen (Jay, Maine/Spruce Mountain) at first doubles as the Huskies' cruised to a comfortable 3-0 lead following the doubles points. Moran and Boutin are now 5-1 on the season in the first doubles slot.
In singles action, sophomore Emily Estes (Gorham, Maine) earned her first collegiate win with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Thomas sophomore Katie McAlllister (Pittston, Maine/Gardiner) at sixth singles. Husky sophomore Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, Maine) won the closest battle of the day, earning a 7-5, 6-2 win at fourth singles over Allen.
Southern Maine returns to action in the Little East circuit on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) at UMass Boston. Thomas travels to Castleton State on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) for a North Atlantic Conference match.
