Box Score BIDDEFORD, Maine – Senior Conor Sullivan (Scarborough, Maine) and sophomore Cole Libby (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) combined for 36 points to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 70-58 win over the University of New England Nor'easters in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday night at Harold Alfond Forum.
The win is the second straight for the Huskies who improve to 2-1 on the season. University of New England remains winless at 0-3.
Sullivan was 8-for-14 from the field for a game-high 19 points,, adding seven rebounds and three assists. Libby poured in 17 points – including 15 in the second half, while senior center Tyler Penney (Barnstead, N.H./Bishop Brady) added 11 points off of the bench on a 5-for-10 effort from the field.
Sophomore Devin Thompson (Winthrop, Maine/St. Mary's) led UNE with 18 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Freshman Brayden Morse (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Wilson) posted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while senior Joshua Butler (Nantucket, Mass.) added eight points and 10 rebounds.
Trailing 34-25 at the half, the Huskies outscored UNE 19-9 in the first five minutes of the second half to grab a 44-43 lead with 14:36 remaining. However a narrow a lead it was, the Huskies' run proved to be pivotal as they would not relinquish it the rest of the way for the win. Sullivan scored eight points in the run, including and offensive rebound and a tip in for the go-ahead basket.
The game remained close as both teams battled and the Huskies led by just four, 60-56, with 3:29 remaining following after a three-pointer from UNE's William Abdul-Malak. With the Nor'easters threatening, the Huskies' relied on the hot hand of Libby who scored nine of the Huskies' 10 points of the half. After a pair of botched possessions for each team after the Abdul-Malak three, Libby connected on a jump shot for a 62-56 USM leads with 1:36 to play. Libby then sank 7-of-8 from the free throw line down the stretch for the win.
Southern Maine hosts Keene State College on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) in its Little East Conference opener. University of New England hosts Colby College on Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) in a non-conference game.
