Southern Maine Drops Western Connecticut 8-1

GORHAM, Maine  – Senior Mary Moran (Windham, Maine/Portland) earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at first singles to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a strong 8-1 win over the Western Connecticut State Colonials in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Friday afternoon at the Gorham High School Tennis Courts.

With the win, Southern Maine improves to 7-3 overall and 2-3 in the Little East Conference.  It is the fourth win in the last five matches for the Huskies.  Western Connecticut falls to 1-6 overall and remains winless in the Little East at 0-3.

Moran defeated Western Connecticut junior Melissa Osorio (Bethel, Conn.) as the Huskies claimed five of the six singles points.  Moran also teamed with freshman Liz Martin (Naugatuck, Conn./Woodland Regional) for an 8-2 win at second doubles as USM swept the doubles points.

Sophomore Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, Maine) won the toughest match of the day, battling to a 4-6, 6-2, 10-4 win at fourth singles.  Aldrich defeated Colonial sophomore Alisa Yongkod (New Fairfield, Conn.) for the point.

Southern Maine hosts UMass Dartmouth in an LEC match on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).  Western Connecticut hosts Salem State on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) also in a LEC match.
