Salem State Downs Southern Maine 2-0

            SALEM, Mass. -- The Salem State University men's soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat the visiting University of Southern Maine, 2-0, in a non-conference game Tuesday evening at Alumni Field.

            The Vikings earned their second straight shutout victory to improve 3-12-0 overall.  The Huskies remain winless on the season falling to 0-17-1.

            Southern Maine, with freshman forward Jacob Street (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) making his first career start in goal, played Salem State to a scoreless stalemate in the opening half as each side had two shots.  USM had the only two corner kicks of the half.

            Junior Max Mondestin (Salem, Mass.) put the Vikings on the board in the 59th minute curling a corner kick off Street's outstretched hands.  The goal was the second of the season for Mondestin.

            The Vikings added an insurance marker in the 85th minute as sophomore Ralph Bertrand (Rowley, Mass./St. Mary's) converted a feed from senior Matt Figueiredo (Wilmington, Mass.) into his second marker of the campaign.

            Junior goalkeeper Nondas Kargakis (Herkalion, Greece) earned his second shutout stopping two shots in the Vikings' net.  Street finished his first career start in goal registering three saves.

            Salem State finished the match with a 7-5 edge in shots, and both sides had three corner kicks.

            Southern Maine plays its final game of the season this Saturday (1:00 p.m.) hosting Little East Conference rival Keene State College.  Salem State plays its final game at home on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) hosting Bridgewater State University for a MASCAC match.
