Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Senior guard Alex Kee (Bath, Maine/Morse) scored a game-high 22 points to lead three players in double figures as the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's basketball team defeated the University of New England Nor'easters 73-57 at Hill Gym Wednesday night.
The Huskies improve their record to 7-5 with the win. The Nor'easters drop to 1-8 with the loss.
Junior guard James Odneal (Pontiac, MI/Bottineau) scored 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field and 2-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc, and junior guard Conor Sullivan (Scarborough, Maine) tallied 13 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Down 38-36 at the half, the Huskies went on a 15-0 run that started early in the second half, increasing their lead to 55-40 with 11:41 remaining. The run was highlighted by two layups and a pair of free throws from Kee, five points from Sullivan, and four points from Odneal.
The Nor'easters cut USM's lead to nine, 62-53, with a 6-0 run at the 5:04 mark highlighted by a jumper and layup from UNE junior guard Charles Fenner III (Bronx, N.Y./Rice). USM would answer back with a 6-0 run of its own to increase its lead to 15 again, 68-53, with 2:01 remaining.
USM senior guard Mike Poulin (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) added six points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists, Kee and Odneal each finished with four rebounds, and Sullivan tallied a game-high six assists. Freshman guard Cole Libby (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) chipped in with four points and senior forward Sean Bergeron (Kennebunk, Maine) had three points and four rebounds, both coming off the bench.
Fenner III led four UNE players in double figure with 18 points. Freshman guard Devin Thompson (Winthrop, Mass./St. Mary's) had 14 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, freshman forward Jesse Dykstra (Douglass, Mass/Whitinsville Christian) added 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, and junior Joshua Butler (Nantucket, Mass.) had 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Nor'easters.
USM will be back in action when they travel to Keene State College on Saturday for a Little East Conference matchup at 3 p.m.
