GORHAM, Maine – Junior co-captains Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) and Mary Moran (Windham, Maine/Portland) led from the top of the lineup as the University of Southern Maine Huskies gutted their way to a 6-3 win over the Castleton State College Spartans in a non-conference women's tennis match Friday evening in Gorham, Maine.
With the win the Huskies improve to 2-1 on the season. The loss is the second in as many matches for the Spartans who fall to 0-2.
Ahead 2-1 after doubles play, the Huskies' Moran and Boutin earned convincing wins at first and second singles to set the tone for USM. Moran defeated CSC sophomore Olga McIntyre (Winhall, Vt./Burr and Burton) 6-0, 6-2 at first singles. Boutin followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win over sophomore Felicia West (Rutland, Vt.) at second singles. Both Moran and Boutin teamed at first doubles for an 8-2 win over McIntyre and West.
Freshman Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, Maine) scored one of the Huskies four singles points earning a solid 6-2, 6-2 win over senior Lauren Fedorka (Temple, N.H./Conval) at third singles to clinch the match for the Huskies. With the match in hand, junior Monique Giroux (Troy, N.H./Monadnock Regional) earned a super tie-breaker win over Spartan freshman Meghan Susslin (St. Albans, Vt./BFA-St. Albans) 6-7, 8-6, 10-4.
Southern Maine hosts Lyndon State on Sunday (11:00 a.m.) in its next contest. Castleton State travels to Thomas College on Sunday (1:00 p.m.) for a NEAC match.
