NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team defeated visiting Southern Maine, 8-1, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday. The match was moved indoors to the Dartmouth Tennis Center because of inclement weather.
The Corsairs took two of the three doubles matches. For UMD, juniors Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) and Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, Mass./Fairhaven ) defeated freshman Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston ) and sophomore Molly Morrill (Litchfield, Maine/Oak Hill ) at number two doubles, 8-2; and sophomore Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, Mass./ Chelmsford) and senior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) downed juniors Monique Giroux (Merrimack, N.H./Monadnock Regional ) and Christina Savage (Caribou, Maine/Caribou ) at number three, 8-3. At number one doubles, juniors Mary Moran (Windham, Maine/Portland) and Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) of the Huskies defeated juniors Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, Mass./Case) and Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral), 8-5.
UMass Dartmouth won all six singles matches in straight sets, with Pelletier coming from behind to defeat Moran at number one singles, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3). Junior Casey Auman (North Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth), who did not play doubles, downed Savage at number six, 6-1, 6-2.
The Corsairs improved to 8-0 and 5-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while USM dropped to 6-4 and 2-3 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Bridgewater State Tuesday. Southern Maine will host Colby-Sawyer Wednesday.
