Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Senior Brooke Phinney (Dedham, Mass./Middlesex) scored a pair of goals to lead a high-powered Bowdoin College Polar Bear offense to a 7-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Tuesday afternoon at Hannaford Field in Gorham, Maine.
The win is the fourth straight for the Polar Bears who improve to 4-0 overall. The Polar Bears are ranked fifth nationally in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches' Association (NFHCA) Poll. The loss is the second straight for USM and drops its record to 4-3.
Bowdoin took command of the game from the start scoring in the second minute. Freshman Rachel Kennedy (Trumbull, Conn./Westminster) slotted home her fourth goal of the season on an assist from junior Katie Riley (Hingham, Mass./Phillips Andover). From there, Bowdoin tacked on five more goals, including Phinney's pair, to take a commanding 6-0 lead at the break.
Bowdoin scored its seventh and final goal of the game midway through the second half as freshman Beth Findley (Hingham, Mass./Loomis-Chaffee) notched her first collegiate goal.
Bowdoin senior goalkeeper Kayla Lessard (Enfield, Conn./Deerfield Academy) picked up the shutout victory. Despite being seldom challenged in the game, Lessard came up big with a pair of sprawling saves to preserve the shutout.
Freshman Casey White (Brewer, Maine) took the loss allowing six goals and making six saves. Junior Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) started the second half and made four saves while allowing one goal. USM freshman Whitney Mower (Garland, Maine/Dexter Regional) made a defensive save. The defensive save was Mower's second of the season.
Bowdoin outshot the Huskies 23-4 and held a 14-4 advantage in corners.
Southern Maine returns to action at St. Joseph's College (Maine) on Thursday (3:30 p.m.). Bowdoin travels to Middlebury College on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) for a NESCAC game. Middlebury is ranked third in the latest NFHCA poll.
