DANBURY, Conn. – Junior captain Mary Moran (Windham, Maine/Portland) executed from the top of the lineup with a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 9-0 win over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon in Danbury, Conn.
With the win, Southern Maine bounces back into the win column and improves to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the Little East. Playing in its first match of the season, the Colonials fall to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Moran defeated Colonial sophomore Alyssa Panasci (Goshen, Conn.) 6-0, 6-0 as the Huskies swept all six singles points after opening a 3-0 lead in doubles action. Junior Christine Savage (Caribou, Maine) earned a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 win over Western Connecticut freshman Ally Emerson (Dover Plains, N.Y.) in sixth singles.
Southern Maine hosts UMass Boston on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) in a LEC match. Western Connecticut hosts Bridgewater State on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) in an LEC match.
