GORHAM, Maine – Junior Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.) earned a hard-won 6-4, 7-6 (5) win at second singles to preserve the 9-0 shutout as the Emmanuel College Saints defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's tennis match Thursday at the Gorham High School Tennis Courts in Gorham, Maine.
The win stops a three-match slide for the Saints who improve to 2-3 on the season. Southern Maine sees its two-match win streak come to an end with the loss as its record drops to 3-2.
Konecnik and classmate Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) led the Saints from the top of the doubles order taking an 8-2 win over Husky juniors Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) and Monique Giroux (Merrimack, N.H./Monadnock Regional) as the Saints cruised to a 3-0 lead after the doubles points had been laid out.
Konecnik fought off a spirited attempt from USM freshman Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, Maine) at second singles, while Woznicki defeated Boutin at first singles 6-0, 6-1.
Southern Maine travels to Western Connecticut State on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match. Emmanuel College is at Suffolk University on Saturday (2:00 p.m.).
