Southern Maine Rolls Past UMaine Farmington 4-2

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine – Senior Rachel Trafton (Corinth, Maine/Central) scored the go-ahead goal in the 66th minute to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 4-2 win over the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers in a non-conference field hockey game Wednesday afternoon at Prescott Field in Farmington, Maine.

Winning its second game in a row, Southern Maine improves to 4-1 overall. The loss is the second in as many for the Beavers who fall to 0-2 on the season.

Locked in a 2-2 battle, Trafton's third goal of the season proved to be the game-winner for the Huskies.  Trafton was assisted by freshman Whitney Mower (Garland, Maine/Dexter Regional).  Sophomore Peyton Dostie (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) knocked in an unassisted goal in the 67th minute for some added insurance and her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The Huskies held a 1-0 lead at the break after an early goal from junior Stephanie Lomasney (York, Maine). Lomasney's first goal of the season was an unassisted goal in the eighth minute that stood through the half.

The Beavers wasted little time in the second half netting the equalizer as senior Lily Barry (Heron, Maine) notched a goal in the 48th minute.  However, the Huskies' jumped right back on top of UMF as junior Ariel Kaplan (Berwick, Maine/Noble) converted an assist from classmate Rebecca Pratt (Cornville, Maine/Skowhegan) just five minutes later for a 2-1 USM lead.

Barry again pulled her team even with the Huskies scoring her second goal of the game in the 57th minute on an assist from freshman Mara Balboni (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee), but Trafton and Dostie answered back in the waning moments of regulation for the 4-2 Husky victory.

USM junior Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) made six saves in the win.  UMF sophomore Curran Brierley (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) made five saves in the loss. The Huskies held a slim 13-10 margin in shots and a decisive 10-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Southern Maine hosts Bridgewater State University on Saturday (2:30 p.m.) in a Little East Conference game.  UMaine Farmington hosts Rivier College on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) in a North Atlantic Conference.
