WATERVILLE, Maine – Junior Mary Moran (Windham, Maine) battled back from a 5-4 deficit – while trailing 40-0 in the decisive game – to score five consecutive points and then take nine of the next 10 games to earn 7-5, 6-1 win at first singles to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to an 8-1 win over the Thomas College Terriers Friday afternoon in Waterville, Maine.
With both teams playing in their season opening match, the Huskies start their 2012 campaign with a 1-0 mark. The Terriers are 0-1 with the loss.
Moran's come-from-behind win came to the detriment of 2011 North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Year Jessica Bowen (Lewiston, Maine) and helped the Huskies secure five of six singles points. Junior Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) defeated Thomas sophomore Dalia Williams (Boston, Mass./Josiah Quincy Upper) 6-4, 6-0 at second singles.
Thomas secured its lone point of the match when freshman Tyler Ventura (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane Regional) defeated USM freshman Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, Maine) 6-1, 6-1 at third singles.
The Huskies swept all three doubles points. Moran and Boutin earned an 8-2 win at first doubles over Bowen and Ventura to lead the Huskies.
Southern Maine hosts Little East Conference opponent Plymouth State University on Saturday (1:00 p.m.). The Terriers host North Atlantic Conference foe Castleton State on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
