Box Score BEVERLY, Mass. -- Freshman Jake Glauser (Goffstown, N.H.) and junior Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H./Coe-Brown Northwood) combined for five hits and six RBI to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 9-3 victory over the Endicott College Gulls in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at North Field.
The win was the third in the last fourth games for the Huskies, and lifted their overall record to 9-8. The loss was the third straight for the Gulls who fall to 10-12 on the season.
Glauser was 3 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI. The rookie outfielder had a single, double and his second home run of the season. White went 2 for 6 with a single and a triple and three RBI. Senior David Ricker (Winthrop, Maine) also had three singles for the Huskies, and sophomore Matt Verrier (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) had a double and a single.
Freshman pitcher Alex Tobey (South Berwick, Maine/Berwick Academy) pitched six strong innings for the Huskies to pick up his first collegiate victory. Tobey allowed four hits and one run. He did not walk or strike out a batter.
Senior Michael Russo (Natick, Mass.) had three hits to pace the Gulls' 10-hit attack. Senior Danny Mello (Peabody, Mass.) chipped in a pair of hits. Junior right-hander Tyler Hitchcock (Abington, Mass.), the first of six Gulls pitchers employed in the game, went 2.2 innings and was tagged with the loss.
USM piled up a 6-0 lead in the first three innings. Sophomore Matt Powers (Portland, Maine/Deering) opened the first inning with a bunt single and eventually scored on an Endicott error. Glauser hit a two-run homer in the second. Verrier had an RBI single in the third. Verrier later scored on Glauser's double, and rookie Dylan Morris (Bangor, Maine) scored on an outfield error.
Endicott finally reached Tobey for a single run in the sixth inning when sophomore E.J. Martinez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored on a double play.
White put the issue out of doubt when he cleared the bases with his sixth triple of the season.
Endicott add a single run in the seventh on an RBI double from rookie Harry Oringer (Dartmouth, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) and another run in the ninth on doubles by Russo and freshman Chase Sullivan (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Hendricken).
Southern Maine is right back in action tomorrow (4:00 p.m.) traveling to play nationally ranked Saint Joseph's College. Endicott will host Bates College on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.).
