UW-Whitewater Blanks Southern Maine 5-0

Box Score

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Senior right-hander Kyle Stewart (Onalaska, Wis.) threw a four-hit shutout to give the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks a 5-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon.

The win improves the War Hawks' overall record to 6-4.  The Huskies dropped their third straight to slip back to .500 at 6-6.  The two squads will face each other again on Wednesday (12:00 p.m.).

Stewart silenced the Huskies' bats allowing three singles, a double and one walk while striking out seven.  At one point, Stewart retired 12 Huskies in a row between the third and seven innings.  The Huskies did not have a runner reach third base during the game.

The Warhawks pounded out 15 hits against three Huskies hurlers.  Sophomore Jared Fon (Germantown, Wis.) led the way with four hits.  Junior JT Schneider (Oak Creek, Wis.) and rookie Mike Mierow (Brookfield, Wis./Central) each had three hits.  Mierow had the Warhawks only extra-base hit with an eighth-inning double.

Sophomore Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) reached Stewart for a pair of singles.  Junior Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H./Coe-Brown Northwood) had a first-inning single and sophomore John Carey (South Portland, Maine) had a ninth-inning double.  Senior southpaw Greg Holmes (West Newbury, Mass.) took the loss going 6.1 innings on the mound allowing 10 hits and two earned runs.

UWW took a 1-0 lead against Holmes in the fourth inning. Rookie Marty Herum (River Falls, Wis.) led off with a single.  After Holmes got his only strikeout of the game, Herum moved to third on a single by sophomore Dylan Friend (Burlington, Wis.), and came across on a sacrifice fly by Mierow.

The 1-0 score lasted until the seventh when UWW picked up a pair of insurance runs.  Schneider scored the first run on an infield error, and Fon came home on a sacrifice fly by senior Matt Beyer (Janesville, Wis./Parker).

The Warhawks added two more runs in the eighth on RBI hits from junior Fred Gromalak (Kettle Moriane, Wis.) and Fon.
