Big Inning Lifts Amherst Past Southern Maine 18-8

Box Score

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Amherst College sent 18 batters to the plate in the seventh inning, scoring 12 runs, and went on to defeat the University of Southern Maine 18-8 in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon.  The two teams combined for 43 hits in the game.

The win closed the Lord Jeffs' 10-game southern trip with a 7-3 mark.  The Huskies dropped their second straight, and fourth in the last five games, to slip to 6-5.

The Lord Jeffs pounded out 25 hits in the game, led by rookie Tyler Jacobs (Westport, Conn./Staples) and senior Mike Samela (Westport, Conn./Staples) with five hits apiece.  Every starter in the Amherst lineup had at least one hit.

Sophomore left-hander Fred Shepard (Amherst, Mass./Phillips-Andover) went the first six innings for Amherst to pick up win.

Junior Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H./Coe-Brown Northwood) had a big day for the Huskies hitting for the cycle.  White had a single in the first, double in the third, homer in the fifth and completed the cycle with a triple in the eighth.  He is the first USM player to hit for the cycle since Adam Lemieux turned the trick against Husson University on May 2, 2004.

Junior Nick Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine) continued his hot spring hitting going 3 for 3 with three RBI.  Senior David Ricker (Winthrop, Maine), sophomore John Carey (South Portland, Maine) and freshman Jake Glauser (Goffstown, N.H.) each had two hits.

Sophomore southpaw Logan Carman (Newfields, N.H./Laurel Spring, Ca.), the first of seven USM hurlers used in the game, was tagged with the loss.

Trailing 6-4 entering the seventh, Amherst reached Carman and three relievers for 10 hits, two walks, two hit batsman and one USM error to push 12 runs across.  Samela had a two-run double, and senior John Wagner (Evanston, Ill.) added a two-run single, during the inning.

Southern Maine is off Monday and resumes play on Tuesday (12:00) against in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.  Amherst returns to New England and is scheduled to play at Dartmouth College on Wednesday (3:00 p.m.).
