Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. -- Sophomore Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.) had a game-high eight points on four goals and four assists to lead the Castleton State College Spartans to an 18-10 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's lacrosse game Sunday afternoon at Spartans Stadium.
The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Spartans and leveled their overall mark at 2-2. The Huskies dropped their third straight game to slip below .500 at 2-3.
Flodstrom received strong support from senior Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, N.Y.) who also scored four goals. Juniors Cori Healy (Jefferson Township, N.J.) and Jessica Taplin (Barre, Vt.), freshman Kate Auer (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) and sophomore Sarah Clark (Guilford, Vt.) all contributed two goals to the Spartans' well-balanced attack. Junior goalie Lily Derbyshire (Little Compton, R.I./Portsmouth) earned the win making 12 saves.
Sophomore Jacki Kelly (Brunswick, Maine) led the Huskies offense with four goals. Juniors Shelby Turcotte (Lewiston, Maine) and Lauren Santo (Salem, N.H.) had two goals apiece. Rookie Julia Pearl (Essex Jct., Vt.) chipped in a goal and two assists. Sophomore Rosie Forster (Andover, Mass.) had a goal, six draw controls and four ground balls. Sophomore goalie Kim Vogel (Sanford, Maine) stopped 15 shots.
Auer and Clark scored in the opening six minutes to give the Spartans the early advantage. The Huskies, sparked by Kelly's two goals, used a 3-1 run over the next nine minutes to tie the score.
The Spartans converted three free-position attempts by Mazzola, Flodstrom and Clark in less than a five-minute span to grab a 6-3 lead. Each side would score twice more before halftime to give the Spartans an 8-5 edge at the break.
Taplin and Turcotte traded goals just over a minute apart eight minutes into the second half to make it 9-6. Flodstrom (two goals) and Mazzola (three goals) would lead the Spartans on a 7-1 run over the next 17 minutes to pull away from the Huskies.
Santo (two goals) and Kelly would score three consecutive goals for the Huskies to close the gap to 16-10 with 2:13 to play. Healy and Taplin scored in the final 90 seconds to account for the final tally.
Castleton State finished the game out shooting Southern Maine 40-33, scooped up 15 more ground balls (34-19) and had an 18-11 edge in draw controls.
Southern Maine returns action on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) when it hosts Husson University at Hannaford Field. Castleton travels to Troy, N.Y., on Friday (5:00 p.m.) to play at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
