GORHAM, Maine – The Bridgewater State University Bears won two out of three doubles matches and swept the singles points en route to a 7-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon at the Gorham High School Courts in Gorham, Maine. The match was called as the second singles game was being played due to inclement weather.
The win is the fourth straight for the Bears who improve to 8-2 overall and remained undefeated in the Little East with a record of 8-0. Southern Maine drops its fourth straight match to fall to 6-6 overall and 2-4 in the LEC.
The Huskies first doubles team of juniors Mary Moran (Windham, Maine/Portland) and Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) earned USM's lone point defeating the Bridgewater State tandem of junior Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.) and senior Lauren Hopp (Dartmouth, Mass.) 8-5. Williamson and Hopp were previously undefeated entering today's match.
Williamson led the Bears in singles action however, downing Moran 6-3, 6-1 at first singles. Hopp earned a straight set 6-0, 6-0 win over USM junior Monique Giroux (Troy, N.H./Monadnock, Regional).
Bridgewater State hosts UMass Dartmouth on Monday (11:00 a.m.) in a Little East Conference match. Southern Maine hosts Johnson State on Sunday (11:00 a.m.).
