PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Tressa Cannata (Cranston, RI) and sophomore Gianna Vallante (Coventry, RI) each earned straight set singles victories and combined for an 8-0 shutout at No. 3 doubles as the Rhode Island College women's tennis team wrapped up the regular season with a 7-1 win over Southern Maine in Little East Conference action on Friday afternoon.
The Anchorwomen (4-9, 3-4 LEC) will next see action in first round action of the 2012 Little East Conference Women's Tennis Championship on Tuesday, Oct. 16 against an opponent yet to be determined. The Huskies will wrap up Little East action at Worcester State tomorrow afternoon (1 p.m.). RIC's regular season finale was to be played tomorrow at home against Little East rival Western Connecticut, but the Colonials suspended the program for the club's final two matches, which will give the Anchorwomen an additional conference win.
The Huskies took the first doubles match as juniors Mary Moran (Windham, ME) and Emily Boutin (Old Town, ME) scored a 9-8 (7-3) victory over RIC freshman Sadie Campanella (Cranston, RI) and sophomore Janice Wang (Branchburg, NJ). RIC took second doubles as sophomore Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT) and freshman Sarah Goodwin (Greenville, RI) earned an 8-4 victory.
Up 2-1 heading into singles, the Anchorwomen took five matches, while Campanella and Moran had their contest at the top spot suspended due to darkness. Cannata did not lose a game in her win (6-0, 6-0) at No. 5 singles. Vallante had just one setback in her victory (6-0, 6-1) at No. 6 singles. Brown (6-3, 6-3) at No. 2 singles, Wang (6-2, 6-1) at No. 3 and Goodwin (6-1, 6-1) at the fourth spot rounded out the RIC winners.
