WATERVILLE, Maine – Sophomore Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) battled her way to a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over freshman Jessica Bowen (Lewiston, Maine) in a two-hour match at first singles to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a resounding 7-2 non-conference women's tennis win over the Thomas College Terriers Thursday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Center courts in Waterville, Maine.
With the win, Southern Maine bounces back from an opening day defeat to even out its record to 1-1. The Terriers, playing in their season-opening match, begin their 2011 campaign with an 0-1 record.
The Huskies led 2-1 after the doubles matches were played, giving up a point by forfeit at third doubles and then went on to win the first through fifth singles points en route to the win. Junior Tegan Talbot (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second singles defeating freshman Dalia Williams (Boston, Mass./Josiah Quincy Upper School).
Southern Maine returns to action on Sunday (12:00 p.m.) at home against Castleton State. Thomas College also hosts Castleton State but on Saturday (3:00 p.m.).
