Southern Maine Slams Thomas 8-1

GORHAM, Maine –  Junior Ali Hartley (Boothbay Harbor, Maine/Boothbay) and freshman Molly Morrill (Litchfield, Maine/Oak Hill) each record straight set 6-0, 6-0 victories in singles action to highlight a dominating performance as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Thomas College Terriers 8-1 in a non-conference women's tennis match Thursday afternoon at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham, Maine.

         With the win, the Huskies improve their overall record to 3-3.  Suffering their second consecutive loss, the Terriers fall to 1-6. 

         The Huskies controlled the match from the start earning three straight points in doubles action to lead the Terriers 3-0 before heading into singles competition.  Hartley and Morrill combined for an 8-0 win at second doubles defeating the Thomas tandem of freshman Emily Howard (Augusta, Maine/Erskine Academy) and senior Sarah Marckoon (Ellsworth, Maine/Ellsworth). 

         In singles competition, Southern Maine earned five out of the six available points.  Junior Tegan Talbot (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) led the way with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at second singles.  Hartley defeated Marckoon at third singles, while Morrill downed Howard at fourth singles.

         Thomas freshman Jessica Bowen (Lewiston, Maine) recorded the lone point for the Terriers taking a hard-won 6-4, 0-6, 11-9 win at the top of the singles line-up.  Bowen defeated Southern Maine number one sophomore Mary Moran (Windham, Maine/Portland).

         Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match at home against UMass Dartmouth.  Thomas travels to Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) for a North Atlantic Conference match.
