GORHAM, Maine – Senior Lauren Turenne (Reading, Mass.) and junior Michelle McEwen (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial) led the way from the top of the lineup as the Salem State University Vikings defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 9-0 in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham, Maine.
With the win, Salem State improves to 4-0 and 1-0 in the Little East Conference. The Huskies fall to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the Little East.
McEwen and Turenne proved to be a formidable pair at first doubles defeating the Southern Maine tandem of sophomore Mary Moran (Windham, Maine/Portland) and junior Tegan Talbot (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) 8-1 as the Viking swept all three doubles points to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
In singles action, McEwen and Turenne continued to lead the Vikings. McEwen defeated Moran in a closely contested match 6-4, 7-6 (1) in first singles, while Turenne downed Husky sophomore Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine).
Southern Maine hosts Thomas College on Thursday (4:00 p.m.) in a non-conference match. Salem State travels to Plymouth State on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) for a LEC match.
