GORHAM, Maine – Senior Michelle Podnecky (Bridgewater, Vt./Woodstock Union) earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at first singles to lead the Castleton State College Spartans to an 8-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's tennis match Sunday afternoon in Gorham, Maine.
With the win, Castleton State improves to 2-1 overall. The Huskies fall to 1-2 with the loss.
Podnecky defeated Southern Maine sophomore Mary Moran (Windham, Maine/Portland) at first singles as the Spartans grabbed five out of six singles points from the Huskies.
Husky junior Tegan Talbot (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) scored Southern Maine's lone point of the match earning a 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 win at third singles. Talbot defeated Castleton State Brittni Racine (Leicester, Vt./Otter Valley Union).
Southern Maine returns to action on Thursday (6:30 p.m.) on the road at Endicott College. Castleton State hosts Plymouth State on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.).
