Box Score 2 MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Junior Steve Cammuso (Rutland, Mass.) had five hits and 10 RBI to lead Eastern Connecticut State University to a doubleheader sweep of the University of Southern Maine, 15-5 in seven innings and 15-8, in Little East Conference baseball action Saturday at the ECSU Baseball Stadium.
The sweep extends the Warriors winning streak to six, and improves their record to 18-3 overall and a league-leading 4-0 in the conference. The Huskies have dropped three straight to slip to 11-9 overall and 2-2 in LEC play.
Cammuso had two hits and five RBI in the opening game, then came back to collect three hits and another five RBI in the nightcap. Senior Jim Schult (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) also had five hits and four RBI on the twin bill. Schult was the winning pitcher in the second game going six innings. Senior Tyler Turgeon (Norwich, Conn.) had five hits in the two games as the Warriors pounded out 27 hits.
For USM, senior Mike Eaton (Sabbatus, Maine/Oak Hill) had four hits, including a triple and home run, and four RBI in the second game. Senior Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.) had five hits and four RBI in the two games.
In the opener, the teams were tied 5-5 through five innings before the Warriors scored four runs in the sixth and six more in the seventh to invoke the 10-run rule. Schult had an RBI double, Cammuso had a sacrifice fly, and sophomore Joe Balowski (Berlin, Conn.) stroked a two-run single in the sixth.
In the seventh, Turgeon drove in two with a single and rookie Danny O'Connell (Braintree, Mass.) knocked in three with a bases loaded double. The final run scored on an infield error.
In the nightcap, the Warriors rebounded from an early 3-0 deficit with a six-run third inning. Cammuso had a two-run single, and Balowski a two-run double, in the rally. The Warriors added two more in the fourth on another two-run single by Cammuso.
The Huskies got back within three in the fifth on an RBI single by Eaton and an RBI double from Mackey. Eaton hit a solo home run leading off the seventh, and had an RBI triple in the ninth. Mackey also had RBI hit in the ninth.
Southern Maine returns to action Tuesday evening (6:30 p.m.) traveling to play the University of Massachusetts Boston at Yetten Field in Waltham, Mass. Eastern Connecticut will host Babson College on Monday (4:00 p.m.).
