Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DANBURY, Conn. -- Sophomore Brett Barrett (Keene, N.H.) delivered a two-run single in the top of the ninth inning to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 10-9, come-from behind victory over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials in the first game of the teams Little East Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Westside Field.

In the nightcap, USM sophomore left-hander Nick Douglass (Poland, Maine) combined with two relievers to limit the Colonials to four hits and one run as the Huskies downed the Colonials 4-1 to sweep the twin bill.  The doubleheader was the LEC opener for both teams.

Senior Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.) had a big day for the Huskies going 6 for 8 at the plate with three runs scored and four RBI.  Junior Anthony Pisani (Cheshire, Conn.) was 3 for 5 with a home run and five RBI in the opener.  Freshman Matt Powers (Portland, Maine/Deering), playing shortstop in the Huskies' revamped infield, was 3 for 7 with three runs scored in the two games.

Douglass went 6.2 innings allowing just four hits and five walks while striking out eight to earn his second win of the season.  Senior Grey Goodrich (Amesbury, Mass.) and junior Greg Holmes (West Newbury, Mass./Central Catholic) combined to get the final seven outs with allowing a hit.

In the opener, the Huskies rallied three times, overcoming 2-1, 6-4 and 9-8 deficits, to take the win.  Pisani gave the Huskies an 8-6 lead in the eighth with a three-run homer down the right field line.  The lead did not last as the Colonials scored three in their half of the inning on an RBI double by sophomore Chris Alberto (Trumbull, Conn.) and a two-run home run by junior David Simone (Danbury, Conn.).

Facing junior reliever Tim Giuliano (Stamford, Conn.) in the ninth, Mackey was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a double by sophomore Tucker White (Deerfield, N.N./Coe-Brown Northwood).  Barrett followed with his single up the middle to score both runners.  The Colonials went in order in the ninth against USM junior right-hander Dustin Stanton (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley) who picked up his second win.

In the second game, the Huskies took the lead in the first inning on Mackey's RBI single.  They doubled their lead in the third when Mackey singled home Pisani who led off the inning with a single.  Mackey scored the Huskies' third run in the sixth, scoring on White's ground ball out.

Western Connecticut finally solved Douglass in the seventh reaching the southpaw for a run on Simone's RBI ground out.  After a walk, Goodrich came on to get a strikeout for the final out of the inning.  Goodrich got the first two outs in the eight before giving way to Holmes who recorded the four-out save.

Western Connecticut sophomore Conor Bierfeldt (Torrington, Conn.) was the tough luck loser.  Bierfeldt went the distance allowing nine hits and one walk while fanning five.  Two of the four runs he surrendered were unearned.

Southern Maine is scheduled to host Endicott College in its home opener on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.).  Western Connecticut hosts Westfield State University in a rescheduled game on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.).
