BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team scored the first eight goals of the game and rolled to its third straight win with a 21-2 triumph over the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference game Wednesday evening at Howard Ryan Field.
The 15th-ranked Polar Bears improve to 5-1 overall this season. The Huskies dropped their fourth straight game to fall to 1-6 on the season.
Junior Katie Stewart (Chevy Chase, Md./Sidwell Friends) and sophomore Carolyn Gorajek (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School) scored three goals apiece for the Polar Bears, who improve to 13-0 all-time against the Huskies. Senior Katy Dissinger (Upper Brookville, N.Y./Friends Academy) added two goals and two assists in the victory while sophomore Devin Hardy (Millbrook, N.Y.), rookie Jordan Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J.) and junior Liz Clegg (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reverse Academy) also had two scores apiece.
Southern Maine's goals came courtesy of senior Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine/Pomfret School) and rookie Rosie Forster (Andover, Mass.) on free-position attempts.
All three of Gorajek's goals came in Bowdoin's opening 8-0 spurt during the first 18:17 of the contest. The Polar Bears held a 12-1 advantage at halftime and used a 6-0 surge out of halftime to push their lead to 19-1. Bowdoin held a 46-8 edge in shots and forced 29 turnovers.
Sophomore Tara Connolly (Simsbury, Conn./The Gunnery) played the first half for Bowdoin, stopping two shots and allowing a goal. Classmate Alexandra Brown (Lexington, Mass.) made a save and permitted one goal in the second half. Southern Maine sophomore Samantha Kiesel (Lakeville, Mass./Kents Hill) stopped 16 shots for the Huskies.
The Huskies look to snap their losing streak on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when they open their Little East Conference schedule with a road trip to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Bowdoin will host NESCAC rival Connecticut College on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
