NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Junior guard Colin Burns (Chepachet, R.I./Ponaganset) and senior forward Brandon Stephens (Dorchester, Mass./Newton North) combined to score 40 points to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs to a 73-62 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Athletic Center.
With the win, the Corsairs improved to 9-12 overall and evened out at 5-5 in the Little East. The Huskies fell to 9-12 overall and 1-9 in the conference with the loss.
Burns and Stephens each scored 20 points to lead the Corsairs. Burns was 7-for-14 from the field, while Stephens was 8-for-16 as the Corsairs shot 46.0 percent (29-for-63) from the field.
Southern Maine senior forward Otis Smith (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Ocoee) led all scorers with 27 points on an outstanding 10-for-17 effort from the floor. Smith also added a game-high 11 rebounds for the double-double. Junior guard Chris Pagentine (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Ahead by four points, 32-28, in the opening minute of the second half, the Corsairs took control of the game with an early run. Following a layup from USM senior guard Devin Chambers (Memphis, Tenn./Oak Hill Academy), the Corsairs ran off a quick 12-2 run to move out to a 44-30 advantage with 13:11 to play.
Southern Maine cut the deficit to nine points twice, but was unable to get any closer as UMD led by as many as 19 points with less than three minutes in regulation.
Southern Maine hosts Plymouth State University on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) in a Little East Conference game. UMass Dartmouth travels to the University of Massachusetts Boston on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.).
