Quane Leads Salem State Past Southern Maine 6-1

            SALEM, Mass. -- Senior Owen Quane (Weymouth, Mass.) dished out four assists to help the Salem State University Vikings defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 6-1, in a non-conference men's soccer match Tuesday night at Alumni Field.

            The win was the fourth straight for the Vikings, and improved their overall record to 10-6-0, including an 8-1-0 mark at home.  The Huskies dropped their fourth straight game and fall to 3-14-0 overall.

            Six different Vikings scored goals for the Vikings.  Junior Lamin Sawo (Saugus, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal in the 18th minute to provide the host side with what proved to be the game-winning goal.  Quane earned his first assist setting up classmate Rafael Santos (East Boston, Mass.) in the 23rd minute.

            Quane picked up his second helper two minutes later assisting junior Josh DaSilva (Lowell, Mass.).  Junior Carlos Escobar (Malden, Mass.) made it 4-0 in the final seconds of the first half.  Salem State had an 11-0 advantage in shots attempted in the opening 45 minutes.

            Freshman Mazen Aljari (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) put the Huskies on the board early in the second half with his fourth goal of the season.

            Salem State scored a pair of goals five minutes apart shortly after Aljari's goal.  Sophomores Chris Goulet (Lowell, Mass.) and Saimir Zempaj (Peabody, Mass.) scored to push the Vikings' lead to 6-1 with 33 minutes to play.  Quane assisted on both goals.

            Rookie goalkeeper Nondas Kargakis (Heraklion, Greece) registered five saves in goal for the Vikings.  Freshman Alex Charette (Fort Kent, Maine) stopped four shots for the Huskies.  The Vikings finished the match with a 17-8 advantage in shots attempted and a 5-2 margin in corner kicks.

            Southern Maine concludes the regular season on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) traveling to Rhode Island College for a Little East Conference match.  Salem State closes the regular season hosting Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday (3:00 p.m.).
