GORHAM, Maine - The fourth-seeded UMass Dartmouth Corsairs won two out of three doubles matches en route to a 5-1 win over the fifth-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies in the first round of the 2011 Little East Conference women's tennis championship Tuesday night at UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex in North Dartmouth, Mass.
With the win, the Corsairs improve their record to 9-4 overall and advance to play the top-seeded Bridgewater State University Bears on Thursday (3:00 p.m.). The loss concluded the Huskies season at 8-8.
Leading 2-1 after the doubles matches were played, the Corsairs clinched the victory earning wins at first, fifth and sixth singles for the 5-1 win. UMass Dartmouth sophomores Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, Mass.) had the key victory of the match outlasting Southern Maine juniors Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) and Ali Hartley (Boothbay Harbor, Maine/Boothbay) in an exciting second doubles match. Pollard and Furtado were able to gut out a 9-8 (7-2) win over Boutin and Hartley giving the Corsairs the 2-1 advantage heading into singles action.
The Huskies' lone point of the match came at first doubles as sophomore Mary Moran (Windham, Maine/Portland) and junior Tegan Talbot (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) took a solid 8-4 victory over UMD sophomore Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, Mass./Case) and senior Courtney Morey (Mashpee, Mass.).
Led from the top of the line-up by Pelletier with a 6-2, 6-0 win at first singles over the Huskies Moran, the Corsairs were able to reach the decisive five-point margin. The Huskies were leading in the other three singles matches when the match ended.
