Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College men's ice hockey team scored twice in the opening 8:06 of the game and went on to defeat the University of Southern Maine, 4-1, Saturday in an ECAC East-NESCAC interleague game at the Alfond Rink.
The Mules, who snapped a six-game winless stretch (0-5-1) with a win over the University of New England on Friday, won their second straight to improve to 4-8-1 overall and 3-5-1 in league play. The Huskies suffered their fourth consecutive defeat and fell to 4-8-2 overall and 2-7-0 in the league.
Special teams and good goaltending played key roles for the Mules. The Mules killed off all six Huskies power plays while converting twice in five opportunities with the man advantage. Senior Cody McKinney (Weston, Fla.) backstopped the Mules stopping 28 of 29 shots.
Junior Tom McGinn (St. Albans, Vt.) netted one of Colby's two power-play goals at 3:44 of the first period to give the hosts an early lead. Sophomore Nick Kondiles (Lake Forest, Ill.) lit the lamp for Colby at 8:06 to make it 2-0.
Senior Karl Burns (Mequon, Wis.) had the only goal of the middle period to give the Mules a 3-0 advantage.
Sophomore Jason Olson (Rutland, Vt.) put the Huskies on the board at 2:55 of the third period off assists from classmate Matt MacDonald (Byfield, Vt.) and senior Zach Joy (Dover, N.H.). Junior Jesse Lehman (Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) ended any thoughts of a Huskies comeback with the Mules' second power-play marker at 16:24.
Southern Maine will be on the road again next weekend traveling the University of Massachusetts Boston on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Babson College on Saturday (4:00 p.m.). Colby travels to Connecticut College on Friday (7:00 p.m.).
