GORHAM, Maine -- Junior guards Nick Nedwick (Irvington, N.Y.) and Jamie Kohn (Columbia, Conn./Coventry) combined to score 52 points to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors to an 86-76 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Warren Hill Gymnasium.
With their third straight victory, the Warriors improved to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in the Little East. Southern Maine fell to 9-6 and 1-4 in the conference.
Nedwick was 9-for-19 from the field for a team-high 29 points, while Kohn snagged a double-double with 23 points on an outstanding 9-for-16 shooting effort and 14 rebounds. Sophomore center Chris Robitaille (Canton, Conn.) added eight points and 10 rebounds coming off the bench.
Southern Maine senior guard Corteze Isaac (Germantown, Md./Northwest) led all scorers with 36 points. Isaac was 13-for-29 from the field, including five three-pointers, and had five rebounds and four blocked shots. Junior guard Mike Poulin (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) added 16 points, while senior forward Otis Smith (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Ocoee) had 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
With the score tied at 56-56 with 9:27 to play, the Warriors outscored the Huskies, 19-4, over the next six minutes to take control of the game. Kohn played a pivotal role in the decisive run scoring 10 of his 23 points. During that stretch, the Huskies were a combined 2-for-10 from the field with three turnovers.
Southern Maine did respond with a 7-2 run to trim the deficit to 10 (77-67) with 1:34 to play, spurred by four points from Poulin, but the Warriors stood firm making 7-for-8 shots from the foul line down the stretch.
Eastern Connecticut finished the game shooting 46.7 percent (28-for-60) from the field and 70.3 percent (26-for-37) from the free throw line. After shooting 47.1 percent (16-for-34) in the first half, the Huskies' shooting cooled in the second making just nine field goals (9-for-28) for a 32.1 percent mark.
Southern Maine travels to Plymouth State University on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.). Eastern Connecticut travels to Keene State College on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.).
