GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore middle hitter Paxton Thornton (Sharon, Conn./Housatonic Valley Regional) had a team-high seven kills to lead the Western Connecticut State University Colonials to a 3-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's volleyball match Saturday morning at Hill Gymnasium. Western Connecticut defeated USM 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18.
With the win, the Colonials improve to 12-3 overall and 1-1 in the Little East Conference. The Huskies fall to 2-11 with the loss and remain winless in the conference at 0-2.
Thornton hit a solid .294 for the Colonials as senior setter Sammie Hathaway (Milford, Conn./Jonathon Law) effectively distributed the ball with a match-high 31 assists. Senior outside hitter Natalie Crosby (East Haven, Conn.) had six kills, while junior middle hitter Victoria Rubits (New Fairfield, Conn.) added five kills. Junior libero Kelley Collins (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the Colonials defensively with 14 digs.
Senior outside hitter Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) led Southern Maine with 10 kills and six digs. Junior outside hitter Hallie Noah (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) chipped in with 10 assists, five digs and two service aces.
Southern Maine travels to Salem State College on October 2 (10:00 a.m.) for the Salem State Invitational. The Huskies will face Mt. St. Mary's in their first match. Western Connecticut continues in action later today at the St. Joseph's College (Maine) Invitational.
