Southern Maine Stumbles at Framingham State, Falls 1-0

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.    –  Senior forward Kristen Sacco (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc) scored the game-winning goal early in the second half to lead the Framingham State University Rams to a 1-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at the Maple Street Field in Framingham, Mass.

            The win stops a two-game slide for the Rams who improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Little East.  Southern Maine falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference. 

            Despite outshooting the Rams 18-10, the Huskies were unable to put a goal past Ram senior goalkeeper Allesha Kenyon (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy). Kenyon earned the shutout and her first victory of the season making 14 saves.

            Sacco's first goal of the season came in the 40th minute when she collected her own rebound and maneuvered around USM freshman goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) for the  game-winner.  Kennedy, who turned in a solid performance in goal, make seven saves for the Huskies. 

            With several good scoring opportunities, the Huskies best chance for an equalizer came in the 64th minute as junior defender Bethany Bougie (Sanford, Maine) sent a centering pass just out of the reach off freshman Ariel Kaplan (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood).

Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) on the road at UMaine Farmington.  Framingham State hosts Salve Regina on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.).
