NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior Amy Lopes (Dartmouth, Mass.) and junior Alexa Fiorita (Reading, Mass.) earned an 8-3 victory at first doubles to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs to a 7-2 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon.
Lopes and Fiorita were the key in setting the stage for the victory for the Corsairs as UMass Dartmouth started the match sweeping all three doubles points. The win is the second in a row for the Corsairs who are now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Little East. The Huskies leveled off at 2-2 overall and remain winless in the conference at 0-2.
Lopes and Fiorita defeated the USM tandem of junior Katelyn Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) and sophomore Tegan Talbot (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat). Lopes also earned a key victory at first singles defeating USM freshman Rachel Miller (Portland, Maine/Deering) 6-1, 6-2.
Talbot picked up one of the two USM points at fourth singles defeating UMD senior Blair Dalrymple (North Attleboro, Mass.) 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) also earned a point for USM downing Fiorita at fifth singles 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Southern Maine returns to action Saturday (1:00 p.m.) hosting LEC opponent Bridgewater State College. UMass Dartmouth hosts LEC foe Plymouth State University on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
