GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Sarah Hawkes (Pownal, Maine/Freeport) led a balanced offensive attack with 11 kills to lead the St. Joseph's College (Maine) Monks to a 3-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's volleyball match Wednesday night at Hill Gymnasium. After dropping the first game 25-16, the Monks won the next three games 25-15, 25-19 and 25-22 to earn the victory.
Both teams were playing in their season-opening match. St. Joseph's is now 1-0, earning its 20th win in the 59-match series between the two local rivals. Southern Maine falls to 0-1.
Hawkes added three service aces, four digs and three blocks. Freshman Sarah Coffey (Hanover, Mass.) added eight kills and three service aces. Sophomore setter Kiah Begley (Berwick, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas) directed the offensive with a match-high 17 assists.
Southern Maine senior Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) led USM with seven kills. Freshman Meghan Rumore (Manchester, N.H./Manchester West) and junior Hallie Noah (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) each had two solo blocks.
Southern Maine hosts the University of New England on Friday (7:00 p.m.). St. Joseph's faces Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday (11:00 a.m.).
