Huskies Fall in Overtime 2-1 to Salem State

SALEM, Mass.  – Sophomore forward Eryn Shea (Spencer, Mass/David Prouty) knocked in the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Salem State University Vikings to a 2-1 Little East Conference field hockey win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday evening at Alumni Field in Salem, Mass.

            With the win, Salem State improves to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the Little East. The loss drops Southern Maine to 5-8 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

            Shea's game-winner marked her third goal of the season and helped the Viking to a come-from-behind victory.  Senior goalkeeper Jessica McKenna (Rowley, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) made 11 saves on 12 shots to seal the victory for the Vikings, including six saves in the overtime period.  

            The Huskies took a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game after sophomore Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine/Hebron Academy). The goal marked Bubier's eighth of the season.  The score stood at 1-0 until late in the second half, when Salem State sophomore midfielder Courtney Lynch (North Andover, Mass.) assisted on junior forward Kaitlyn Aronian's (Chelmsford, Mass.) game-tying goal in the 51st minute. 

            USM freshman goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) played well in the loss making 12 saves on 20 shots. 

            Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:30 p.m.) when it travels to Keene State College.  Salem State travels to Worcester State on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
